DIY Diaper Balm
1/4 c. Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
1/4 c. Cocoa Butter
1/4 c. Shea Butter
1 Tblsp. Beeswax
1 Tblsp. Almond or Apricot Kernel Oil
1 tsp. Vitamin E oil
10-15 drops dōTERRA Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops dōTERRA Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
*Frankincense and Melaleuca (Tea Tree) are also effective.
2 - 8 oz Glass Jars (I like the flat style Ball jars because I don't have to reach way inside to get to the product.)
Properly sterilizing the jars and using new lids is recommended. Melt coconut oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, almond or apricot kernel oil, and beeswax over low heat in a double boiler (I use a quart-sized glass jar that I keep on hand for mixing my DIY lotions placed right in a small saucepan of water). Allow to melt over low heat until completely incorporated. If using a jar like I do, place a lid loosely on the jar and shake periodically to mix ingredients. Note: it is very important to allow this mixture to melt and incorporate completely. This is called emulsification and prevents separation of the product during use and storage.
Once your mixture is fully emulsified, remove from heat and add Vitamin E and essential oils. Shake or stir, pour into jars, and allow to cool before sealing. Use this as you would any diaper balm for daily use or when needed. It also makes a great baby lotion (grown up, too) and general first aid ointment. It will be softer or more solid depending on the climate where you live. If you want to soften it a bit, just rub it between your palms and let your own body heat do the work (never use a microwave). The balm will have a lovely chocolate scent in addition to the oils you use. This is the cocoa butter and it smells awesome! Enjoy (and leave some for baby)!
